Migration Trends

The following chart provide an illustration of the long-run relationship between migration and economic growth. Figure one is a scatter plot of real GDP per capita and net migration. The Celtic Tiger economic boom and net migration appear to be very much linarly related. As we can see 2009 is very much an outlier – the only one – from the long-run trend in this graph. The future path of this graph is determined by a multiple of interesting facets, including; the time and depth of economic decline and migration opportunities open to the Irish labor market. What this graph looks like in 10 years time is anybody’s guess.
